New Year celebrations are proofs that human beings are by nature optimists. It is just another day - a point on a planet's orbit - like any other point - an identical spot where Earth returns year after year (well almost! I'm sure we can disregard the planetary precession) - and yet what a world of difference! We look back, we introspect, we disregard the fact that what we have done in the past year will effect us in the future, and then look forward to a great new year. If this is not optimism then what is? Or is it that only the optimist celebrate New Years?
